Can someone please tell me what the difference is between a gecko and a lizard. I know how to see the difference but have no clue why they are always in separate catergories

Geckos are lizards, as well as varanids, chameleons and skinks. But some people think that lizards are only lacertids-if thats what you want, look in the fieldguids
