Texas Horned Lizard from Amirillo, Texas USA (edited)

Hi all,

My one best friend is working on a farm in Amirillo, Texas. He's driving harvesters and doing daily farming duties. He says that he has never seen farms as big as the ones in the USA!

He says that they find about 5 Rattle Snakes a week! (still waiting for the pics to identify the species) Unfortunately the Farmer hates snakes and kills them off. But due to my educational talks to my friend while we were on the farm here in SA, my friend also got a liking into snakes and other reptiles! He just leaves them be!

He sent me 2 pics of a Horny devil, they found wondering around.

Please excuse as he is no professional photagrapher! LOL

That is a Texas Horned lizard Phrynosoma. cornutum.

They are very cool. We had a pair awhile ago. The one didnt want to eat so leke and died. The female we had left was outside in her sun cage. When one of our workers took her out to put her in a tub to clean her cage, she jumped of his hand into the adult beardie cage and the one feamle beardie chowed her.

Two lizards gone in a weeks time.

You have mixed up two species which sound similar. The Thorny devil is from Australia and the Horned lizard or Horned toad is from the Americas.

I think the term "horny devil" is something that you heard from someone else and had nothing to do with herpetology.

The sharing part of the pictures and your buddies experiences was good. The other reference was over share.

Very few people get to see these reptiles. I think they are fascinating and even though one species is classed as invasive another is classed as threatened.

The mating behaviour is also different to almost all the lizards I know. The male will actually tip the female onto her back and then mate with her.

I believe that certain species will be simple to keep in SA. If you have some anthills nearby and a good supply of small crickets they should do well in captivity here.
