Why do you keep snakes?

Postby aTrolley » Fri Apr 20, 2012 9:36 am

People often ask me why I love snakes so much and why I'm so attracted to them as pets. Im interested in hearing some of your reasons?

They are something different, something out of the ordinary and special. Also the variety of the animals is amazing. They are the exception to the rule "pets are cute and cuddly" ;)

That awesome moment when you see your cornsnake shed in your hands
That awesome moment when you feed your cornsnake a mouse you think will not fit, and it finnishes the mouse
That awesome moment when you find a wild slug eater and watch it feed on a slug and snail (both on different occasions)
That awesome moment when you feed a frog to a wild caught brown water snake.
That awesome moment when your snake comes out the cage while you are admiring it (as if it knows!)
That awesome moment when you see your snake drink for the first time, or after a long period of not seeing
That awesome moment when you think about what will happen when I put a gecko here and your snake eats that
And all those moments which just makes you see how well they are adapted to being awesome

I am from WC and know wild caughts are not allowed to be held as pets, but I did bring a few home for photos and to see feeding, and we all started with finding a wild snake, keeping it and seeing how awesome they are :D If we did not start doing that, none of us would be here :D

... and it just gets better when they mate, lay eggs and the eggs hatch. That thrill cannot be described.

I like to think it is the escalation theory, first I liked Venus-flytraps then spiders and then snakes.
If I'm gonna be an old, lonely man, I'm gonna need a thing, you know, a hook, like that guy on the subway who eats his own face. So I figure I'll be Crazy Man with a Snake, y'know. Crazy Snake Man. And I'll get more snakes, call them my babies, kids won't walk past my place, they will run. "Run away from Crazy Snake Man, " they'll shout!”

it_bit_me, I still keep Venus Fly Traps, and I have a few of the other carnivorous plants aswell, I am attracted to that which is hard to explain, because if you think, most people kill snakes on sight, and because of that attitude I like snakes :D Anything which is poorly understood is fascinating, so lets help people understand them better by keeping them

I like snakes because the are amazing, beautiful animals. I've always liked snakes even when I was small. Just like Rodwraylva explained there are so many great moments that we get to experience, I still remember how amazing it was to see my corn snake drink for the first time. But I have never actually seen my corn snake shed, its something that i would really like to see.

That awesome moment when you got your first snake. Or see snakes mating, watching a snake lay or seeing eggs hatch.. or seeing an egg eater eat. Or come up to you and take a bird egg from your hand. Very cool moments and reasons for me.

One of the questions that gets me every time is ' how do you know which is which, don't they all look the same'

Yes, that is very annoying. Also when you pick up a Brown House Snake in someone's garden and they ask,"Are you sure it's not venomous ?"

With a few snakes, if you have like 10, then there might be two snakes which looks a lot alike, but even with say 10 normal corn snakes, each has a unique set of markings and when you find that, you will never be confused again :D
