Primogen, my technical knowledge is limited, but apparently nothing was wrong with the disk, but the hardware which reads the disk was done.

They replaced a lot of parts on the hard drive with new parts (which is where the expense came in) and finally copied all the data onto a new drive.

Thanks. Well I suppose if the platter disks were damaged I doubt they would have recovered much data(should have figured out that myself, but anyway...).
