Bad Petshop in Pretoria

Not sure if this is the right post but would like to share my views.

I was at a petshop in Pretoria and was shocked with what I saw.
Its based in Pretoria street next to McCArthy's in Silverton.

They advertised water dragons which I wanted but when I got there I was shocked.
Being WATER DRAGONS, they need a big water bowl. I use cat litter boxes for mine which work great and are dirt cheap.
In this petshop they barely had a water bowl. Small little bowl which was just about empty.
The dragons are super skinny, The one female's tale is badly injured and was never treated and the other one's legs are not working properly, dragging as she goes along. I mentioned this to the shop keeper whom replied he didnt notice.
All the animals are in tiny cages. ALL the cages are dirty, not one cage was clean. Most of the snakes that he has are super skinny whereby you can see the bone on the back, Mot did not have water in their bowls or just a few drops. The shop was very cluttered and it seemed that anything can fall on you at any stage. All the fish tanks were also dirty.
They advertised other lizzards and when I get there to view them, I had to wait almost 2 hours for somebody to bring them, whereby they were in a plastic box all taped up and they were to skittish to even take out and again, very skinny.

I know and admit that my cages are not clean 24/7 and that sometimes a bit of poo is present, but then I clean it when I see it. If you have a day job and can only clean on weekend, I am fine with that, at least the animals will have water and food.

I believe that if you have a petshop, you are there atleast 10 hours a day of not longer so when the rest of us work, clean dammit. If you with your animals the entire day then I believe and expect all the cages to be clean and everybody to have water atleast.
Most of this guys snakes were on dirty, soiled carpet. If its a mission to clean it, change to news paper and replace daily seeing that you are at the shop the entire day.

I am just getting sick to see petshops sell animals at sky high prices and not even have the decency to clean their cages and give them water.
My anger is based toward dirty petshops. I understand that some of us work and can only clean on weekend but thats a diffrent story.

Anybody thats based in Pretoria, please visit this shop and comment your feedback.
I might be wrong or they decided to have a proper clean but I think you will be shocked by what you will see.

Its really a shame. And the worst part of all is that they dont even really get back to you via calls or sms.
I feel sorry for the animals and sometimes just buy them to try and save them.

I dont expect the guy to be closed down, but give him a warning to clean up and start looking after the animals and if still not doen, then more drastic steps must be taken...
He mentioned that the guy who he gets his stock from will have a table at the expo in march...
His supplier is a guy that lives in Mayville PTA and he is a cricket breeder. He has sailfin dragons and many iguanas. Does anybody know who this guy is?

I adviced the guy that people are very unhappy about his shop and that he will be reported to the spca,

I got a call from him now and seems he has heard about ARNO NAUDE.

He is very rude to me and said that he does not care and that I can report him to "ARNOLD" as he does not care.
Firstly, if you want to make like you know anything of somebody like ARNO, get his name right atleast and secondly, if he cant look after his animals its not my fault.
I enquired about the water dragons and adviced him that I will make him a offer to which he replied that he want R4800.00 for them?
For animals so sick?

Its crazy for animals in that condition.

And they have sailfin dragons as well... These are very rare animals and not everybody can get these so I wonder where they come from.
His supplier adviced me that he imported them but when I asked him about Import permits and quarintine, he knew nothing..

I am not accusing anybody now, but would like to know if there are any reports of Sailfins and spiny tail iguanas that have been smuggled into the country???

You should direct your complaint to the SPCA. They are aware of him and would love to close him down. Let them go and inspect.

Like Whitelipp mentioned this shop has been on this forum many,many times with the same complaints. And I remember something from a previous topic about this shop, that the SOS2 organisers has banned him from further shows. There was complaints about his show stock's poor condition.

DarkGego you can write all of this down. It is up to the SPCA to decide if they feel you are contravening the Animal Protection Act.

Looks like a very promising chance for someone to turn the fate of the petshop around!

I'm sure this is the same place. I originally went to go look at 3 water dragons he had but they were in a bad way so it seems the other two died. He still told me that he sold them.... They also had a trio sailfin dragons. Does anyone know of any of these sailfins that has been imported legally?

This must be the shop because I can recall some of the animals. I'm happy that he is rather selling them to someone that will look after the animals.
Personally I'll say that he must rather have a auction, then everything will go faster. This shop was well stocked but the animals was my issue.
