Snake ID

Postby Ironfire » Mon Sep 30, 2013 5:45 pm

I found this snake the other day and i was wondering if anyone could help me with it, what kind of snake is it? My parents think that it is a mole snake but I think it is a olive house snake? I live in Cape Town, so it is definitely not a black mamba. it was difficult to get a close up, the snout is quite long and the eyes are neither large nor small. it is a olive grey, that is what led me to believe that it was a olive. It is not a brown-house because it does not have the distinctive white line running through they eye. Thanks for the help :D :o

It's difficult to tell from the picture, but my best guess would be a Brown Water Snake.

Almost 100% sure that it is a brown house snake. If you look closely it has the pale lines running from the nose to behind the jaw just above the eye. It also has a pale line running along the side of the body. I would almost put money on it being a bhs.

I can't see the white line running through the eye so i tried to take a close up, if you can see the tip of the nose a slight red. Jamster you are the expert I just wanted to make sure that it is a bhs. :-?

Eish, now it is starting to look like a dull subadult herald..

Wow just shows you how the angle can make it look like a different snake.
The second picture looks like a herald to me as well, also your comment on the red on the end of the nose seems to fit herald.
You can always pop onto Google and check what a red lipped herald looks like and see if that's what you've got there.

Kev, just for your interest, I have not seen a single Herald in the Western Cape with red lips. Down there they have what some people call "White-lipped Heralds."

Just an interesting fact.

Above is a link to a picture I have of a snake I need help with. Can anyone identify it for me.

When it was threatened it curled in this position and its white spots became whiter.

Thx.

That's a Rhombic Egg-eater.
