Where can I get a mercury vapour bulb?

Where can I get a mercury vapour bulb?

Postby merlinator » Tue Jul 29, 2008 11:32 am

Hi,

I have heard that the UVB strip lights don't provide enough UVB rays and that I need to get a Mercury vapour bulb.
However, I have been to several pet shops in Gauteng and none of them have even heard of it. Is there anywhere in Gauteng where I can actually get them?
Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than
what it might appear to others that what you were or might have
been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared
to them to be otherwise

Try stores that specialise in lighting. Be aware that many of them are high wattage globes and as a result give off some serious heat.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

I know that the nursery between Northgate and Clearwater has a reptile petshop that sells those bulbs.

Let me know if it is close enough and I will see to give you more info on it.

Good luck

I have got one in my shop an Exo terra one. Petshop don't refer to it as mercury vapour rather a sun glo or powersun uv.

Hello,

Keep in mind that a Sun Glo has NO UVB properties. It is just a basking bulb. You will want the Solar Glo from Exo terra which is the Hagen Mercury vapor bulb that you will want, or the Powersun.
I don't know if you can get the Megaray over there, but if so, that one is the best one.

I meant solar glo sorry. The sun glo is just a normal basking spot lamp

just thought i would add to this.....i keep my beardie under a mega ray that i ordered from america...when you work out the costs and benefits to the animal they are actually a LOT cheaper than using a Repti sun 10. i would recommend them to anyone they are simply amazing and you will notice the difference in you animal and his colour. i would not reccommend the zoo med powersun, as far as MVB's go, they not very good and you really better off using a repti sun 10 as they produce uv for longer. the bulb made by exo terra is actually not that bad but does not come close to a mega ray.
if you want one go onto the mega ray website
http://www.reptileuv.com/

the bulb will arive in 2 weeks - i can guarantee this as i have had 3 shipments from them.
their customer service is FANTASTIC and if you have ANY issues with the bulbs they will replace them with no charge to you...its really woth it.
(oh...and my cage set up and lighting is posted in their pic section for set ups: woot)

hope that helps

Hello,

Just wondering what you decided regarding your lighting?
That is great to know that Megarays can be shipped over there fairly easily. Bobmac is awesome. :D
I agree, the Powersun is "ok" but, it is a low output MVB, which really is no stronger than the Reptisun 10 or the Arcadia D3 12% tube lights. Plus, they have to be replaced 2 times per year whereas the Megaray will last at least 1 year with excellent output.

my mercury vapor light cost R700 bucks and the seperate bulbs are 150. these wil last about 8 month if i dont switch them on and off too much. the casing is huge! it doesnt put of too much heat the first half hour and then picks up. the light spectrum also seems to change after a while of being on. next time ill buy a reptile one but im also looking for a camelioh cage, maybe natural sunlight cant be replaced
If I'm gonna be an old, lonely man, I'm gonna need a thing, you know, a hook, like that guy on the subway who eats his own face. So I figure I'll be Crazy Man with a Snake, y'know. Crazy Snake Man. And I'll get more snakes, call them my babies, kids won't walk past my place, they will run. "Run away from Crazy Snake Man, " they'll shout!”
