Those photos look a bit photoshopped. Look at the "line" edging on the tortoise. Also look at the size of the tortoise in comparison to the grass it's on. I think someone is trying to take someone for a ride.

Why does the size change and why do you take such close up pictures. Please go to the effort of taking clear photos with some standard measured object right against the tortoise. A Coke tin or 2 litre bottle would be suitable. Hold still till the tortoise is clear and in focus and then push the button.

I apologise for the rudeness Bushviper. I swear that is a real tortoise will do the coke can thing in the future. I am the type of person who takes what you said as an insult

That was actually Bushbaby who said that, but lets rather stick to the actual tortoise identification as that is way more interesting! Can you please do me a favour, and photograph the tortoise right from above, and from below, so that we can do scale counts to see if that helps. If it doesn't...we'll have to bring in the big guns and ask one of the professionals :)

<sarcasm> take the photos from 50 yards!</sarcasm>
seriesly though guys... this tortie is quite a character. He charges after you and munches at your feet, which in my opinion is hysterically funny. Taking pro photos is not always easy with a camera phone, dunno if p.boy is using a camera phone or not. probably? if you want, I can come round and you can use my wifes 6mp sony.

p.boy and I chatted last night about the apparant "offensive" comments. I told him to lighten up, after all this is the internet. One thing about p.boy I can promise you, he aint in to bs, so if he posts it here it's exactly what he witnessed. I got him to join this site, as I find this site epically awesome to just read. as a n00b he also needs to learn forum rules and nettiequette which I am teaching him now. not really much of an internet user that boy... sorry p.boy, i love you, but facts are facts *grinn*

I am quite interested in the idea that this may be a hybrid. I have always been into lizards, recently got into snakes, and thus started learning about hybrids... that is so exciting as it means that there is more and more variations possible than Darwin imagined :D

as far as tortoises go, until a few years ago, i thought that tortoises where only one species. I thought they lived for 150 years and they grew to the size of old volkswagens. pretty much what I was taught at school. I do know that the giants they have at Michels Park in durban can pick up big speeds at feeding time, so leads me to wonder, are Torties really slow, or do they just move lathargically? Just a question I have always pondered since watching one of those durban giants pound dirt...

The one diagnostic feature that is missing is the gular, those shell extensions just below the head, that originate from the lower shell (plastron). It looks like they are very eroded away, had they been there. If they were present and extended out greater than the top shell, then for sure an angulate would be that animal. I have seen several sizes and shapes of angulate that are not poster perfect animals as depicted in so many field guides. Best guess is an angulate. The reddish hue on the plastron is a strong indicator that it is an angulate.
