Postby Deem » Sat Mar 19, 2011 1:44 pm

Hi,

I had a lekker surprise yesterday when I got home from work... A leopard gecko :-)

This is my setup (chatted about it in another thread)

try 2.jpg

Just a question:

I have put pool filter sand over the base as a substrate. Is this okay?

This is the new addition...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that looks like a Fat-Tail Gecko to me? :?:
Either way, habitat is very similar I believe so all is well I suppose.

Very nice setup :) congrats, I was so excited when I got my baby boy!

Hi.

Spoke to the person who got it for me and they said it was a Leopard Gecko from a well known pet shop.

It is still young though?

Yeah that's nothing like a African fat tail.

Pool sand as substrate.... Well, it does look nice. But for babies i'm told that you should never put them on sand until they're full grown to reduce the chance of sand impaction ( where it clogs up the gut. can be dangerous). But mostly, to avoid heartache, just put it repti-carpet, tile or astro turf. there's nothing they can ingest that way.

Very cool Gecko though!

You can get astro-turf at certain carpet shops too. Do yourself a favour and get enough for two. That way as one gets soiled you can remove, clean and let it dry nad just replace it with the other one.

It doesn't happen as often with leos, but with carpets there is the problem of toes getting hooked on carpet. Our leos are on a bark/ potting soil/ perlite mix that is changed once a month. Our one female has been on it since we got her as a hatchling and we're never had a problem with impaction. We don't feed in the cages though.

Yeah, I remember Fooble telling me about toes getting hooked in carpet when i bought mine from him. I have actual astro turf. Like plastic blades of grass. It's wonderfully easy to clean, looks nice, and I'm fairly sure my gecko's like the feeling of it under their feet :D

Coolness. There are few things as sad as lizards and geckos with bits missing.

Thanks all.

Latest update is I am now using paper towel. And it is a lot easier.

Thanks for letting me know about the pool filter sand, took it out that night but was too late. The little critter has been eating the sand. I know because it is all in his poop! I just hope that it is all passing through!
He seems to be eating all the crickets as there are none left in the morning..

Also I am doing another background, the other one is abit complicated with the paper, so that can be for when it is older. Will update pics once I am finshed with the new project.

Just a question: Does anyone know what is the best varnish or sealant to use in a cage, as the smell is so bad!

Thanks again!

when i got my cage it smelled like varnish for weeks. finally i figured out that burning a candle in there for several hours took the smell away.

With feeding, to make sure thhat they're eating, make an escape proof dish for the crix, but in such a way that the gecko's can get in. I just use an ice cream tub with holes cut in the side. Crix cant escape but geckos can get in and out ( also "edit" the crickets legs so they cant jump). It goes in at feeding and out when the crix are gone.

Hope the sand passes through alright. PM Fooble if there are any complications. He'll set you straight.

Sweet

Hey Deem Awesome man.
I have been doing it since about 2009 but never did a full setup(with sides and ground) I use grout and acrylic paint of the color I want. This makes the grout or tile cement a bit less weather or water damageable. Thereafter I make a cheap mans spray-paint bottle with a normal spray bottle for spraying plants. Take some acrylic and mix is with a little water and color the grout after it has dried for a day or two. And I seal it off with modge podge and it works great also do the same with the bottle, mix some modge podge with only a little bit of water and layer and let dry about 3 - 7 times. This really makes it last A LOT Longer before you need to recolor and seal again. And the great thing is the modge podge if layered a few times makes it very water resistant. Just a tip if you didn't know it yet.
By far the most awesome one I've seen.
Happy Herping.
