Baby colour and patterns: can adult colour?

Baby colour and patterns: can adult colour?

Postby Docmorrie » Fri Jan 06, 2012 8:18 pm

Hi there guys and girls.

I'm new to leopard gecko keeping. I bought two leo gecko babies (two days ago) from Robbert Robbertze. They are healthy, docile and eats & poo well. I saw Robbert's ad at Gumtree.co.za, selling " albino super hypos" for R550 ea. He told me that all the albino's were already sold, but that he still have a few interesting patterns left, going for R250 ea. There were several baby gecko's to choose from? Many had the typical baby pattern, clear cut horizontal bands of yellow and dark. However, two had slightly different colours and patterns... These were my chosen babies. The one is slightly paler in the dark bands and the other one has this "wave" irregular bands - almost if someone shifted the left and right sides of its back's skin in opposite directions. Obviously different from the rest.

My question is, are there ways to predict adult colour / pattern/ morps, by looking at the baby's patterns? Or is it a case of wait and see for all of them?

A picture or two can help us help you, but in saying so recessive genes can not be seen in the phenotype (how the animal accutualy looks and what you can physically see) i.e het. for patternless, albino and so on), unless it's in it's homozygozes form.i.e Bells Albino or Tremper Albino. You would need the breeder to be more specific in telling you what recessive genes these gecko's carry. Hypomelanistic gecko's you would be able to visually see, they are lighter in the darker bands and on the head. Posts some pics, let see but again ask the breeder what the parents of these gecko's were and if the parents carried any recessive genes, dominant or co-dominant genes, you should not battle from there as not many of the triple gene or 5 gene gecko's are available in South Africa. Also ask the seller what temps he incubated these gecko's at, as tempreture has a huge influence on gecko babies i.e sex ratio's and colouring in different morphs (mutations).

Also to answer your question, yes if you know what your babies are, you would safely be able to predict what the end result would be.

Everybody is having trouble posting pics, so I dont think it has got to do with your Ipad.

Hi there.

Just an update on the two baby geckos...

The one in the first pic turned out to be a female, possibly High Yellow. Very few spots already with nice yellow undertone.

The one in the second pic turned out to be male, possibly Jungle, however, currently measuring about half the size of the female?

Both geckos' tails are nice and fat, so it not like the female gets more food. Why this huge diffence in size, although they are the same age?

Here is a picture of my Female Sunglow, bought from Rolf Dennison at the Randburg Expo back in March.

She is a beaut!!! She has a very healthy appitite, and grows like mad!
