What is allowed

Hi...I am new to this board and new to owning animals in South Africa. Please correct me if I am wrong, but...

Leopard tortoises are only allowed to be kept with a permit.

If a tortoise is not indigenous to SA, is it allowed and do you need a permit to keep it?

Thank you

Illegal to keep any indigenous tortoise/terrapin/marine turtle without a permit, and very difficult to get a permit in most cases. Illegal to keep any exotic tortoise/terrapin/turtle without permits, and basically impossible to get a permit to do so, unless you are registered as a Zoo, etc
Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, experience usually comes from bad judgment.

Actually the authorities have become rather lenient on keeping leopard tortoises in Gauteng. You can contact nature Conservation and they will help you through the process of getting your tortoise legally.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.
