New 4yr+ Veiled...

New 4yr+ Veiled...

Postby BeardieLuv » Wed Jan 25, 2012 9:15 am

Hi All :)

I have just taken in a 4+yr Veiled and having read all the care sheets need to clarify the idea of a basking lamp - some say yes some say no... can somebody clarify what is best?

Charlie is a rescue who was suffering with some kind of bacterial 'scale rot' on his head and upper back - he has apparently been treated and has been shedding almost permanently since it cleared up. He will be seeing the vet on Friday for a full work up -

Any tips and advice on his keeping would be greatly appreciated.

Does the cast look like that due to the bacteria or due to MBD? Also nice setup but if you could try and put some more branches in there. and in an enclosure like that I wouldn’t put a basking light, if it was a flexeriam and its very cold winter you could put one on the outside, but I try to stay away, work with natural sunlight its better if you can if you can’t then the stuff to your disposal will work. I hope she brings you a lot of happiness.

Thanks for the advice Kinghero - I will duly add more branches. Natural sun is indeed 'king' as soon as he is settled I will get him out in the sun. I am not entirely sure about the cast - he is not showing any other symptoms of MBD, so I am inclined to go with the bacteria as a cause but he has heavy shedding on and around the cast - I'll have the doc check it .

Thanks again for your input.

:) Charlie has been given a bill of good health by the Vet - He does need a little extra calcium but hasn't developed MBD. The cast damage was most likely the bacterial infection which is all cleared up. He has been 'sun-bathing' everyday now and his colouring is coming out beautifully! Will add new pics in a mo.

Sunlight is the best medicine. I hope you realise he is not going to live forever. You should still have two or three years of pleasure out of him. Luckily those will probably be the best years of his life looking at how he has improved.
