Please help me ID this snake from Uganda

Postby susana » Fri Sep 30, 2011 9:36 am

I photographed this snake from a snake park in Uganda, however there was no information as regards its id. What could be?

From that picture we can only speculate... Macrelaps... but I think someone else can be more specific.

Hi Susana. It may be a Burrowing Adder (Atractaspis) - but a bigger picture would help.

Jamster - Macrelaps won't be found in Uganda.

Re: large format of snake from Uganda for ID

Postby susana » Fri Sep 30, 2011 1:25 pm

I post a large photo as per request. All I remember about its behaviore was when this snake would be disturbed, it would make rapid body movements to form various body shapes. I had thought of it as the Cape Wolf Snake, but then the snake keeper would call it " Gater snake" could be Werner’s Garter Snake? though he was not sure. Look closely at its short tail and small eye placed almost to the end of its head. Thanks.

It seems to have many small scales, so I lean toward A. microlepidotus (which I think is called A. fallax these days)

Dorsal counts are too low for any of the Atractaspis.
Elapsoida was a good guess, but I am going with Polemon chrystyi - Christy's Snake Eater

I think s'mee hit the nail on the head. After some research it does appear to be Polemon, which are known for the short, stubby tails ending in a sharp spike and in East Africa have 15 scale rows at midbody.

Thanks Friends all who have contributed to my call. I have therefore taken it as Christy's Snake Eater (Polemon chrystyi) which are also in Kampala area, where I took the photo
