Corn snake scales turning white???

Corn snake scales turning white???

Postby Primogen » Fri Nov 09, 2012 5:05 pm

For the past 2 months or so my male corn snake has had a few of his scales turning white
their are a few on his head and about an inch down his neck are a few more.

At first I thought he had injured himself and it healed funny but after he shed their were
even more white in the scales. There are no scars or anything the scales just look white.

He is in perfect health, eating very well, active and a nice clean shed.
He is about 9 years old now.

Has this happened to anybody else or does any one know what this is.

Thanking you
Kyle

Pictures would help a lot. Without pics it's pretty difficult to say what's going on.

That looks like rubbing to me.

What decor do you have in your cage?

Is there female nearby?

I thought rubbing aswell but it was never pink so I dismised it.
He was mated to my female and she is nearby but he stopped looking for her when he went into the blue
and after he shed I thought it would go away but it the marks just got bigger, there is no damage just looks like there
is no pigment.

As for decor he is in a glass tank with a ventilated wood lid, has some branches and rocks and the substrate is kenaf.

If it is rubbing will it go away after some more sheds?

Yeah, in that case I suspect it's rubbing.

I'm sure he's just smelling the female and trying to get to her.

It should go away after a few sheds.

Cheers

Also looks like rubbing to me due to the opaqueness. This does not look like what many are seeing in ball pythons with out of place solid white scaling.

Perhaps adjust enclosure items.

Well he stopped trying to escape after he shed, the reason i asked about the white is because its not on
the tip of his nose but maybe he got on the drift wood or something. the marks should go away after a
couple of sheds then.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I've got two striped amels that started developing white on their scales from about 4 years old. No injury, no rubbing. It gets more pronounced every year, and it actually looks very nice :) I will take some pics this evening and post some pics.

After the above post by Chantel, is it similar to how some anery corns get yellow on them as they get older?

No, it's very different. I'm almost inclined to think paradox is involved. It's not the usual change of colour pigmentation as one sees in Anery's and a lot of the other colour morphs.
