Nile Monitor Questions?

Postby Psychogav » Tue Jan 11, 2011 8:21 pm

I am investigating keeping nile monitors for a friend. Has anyone had any luck breeding them and if so is it possible to buy captive bred specimens. (Captive bred under permit that is).

You mean like holiday care?

Niles get massive and you would need a massive cage for one, with a pond.
Im not sure if anyone has bred them but I suppose if you keep a pair in a huge aviary there might be a chance.
What a world....

He wants to consider doing it on a large scale, I am most worried about how males and females react, would you keep breeding groups or would they rip each other apart??

I know that these guys never really tame down like the rock monitor.
I have seen wild ones living close by - but I am not sure how territorial they are.
You know, you can touch a stick of dynamite, but if you touch a venomous snake it’ll turn around and bite you and kill you so fast it’s not even funny.

My biggest question is could you keep them in breeding groups or would they rip each other apart. I know the americans breed them but cannot find any information at all about how? when? etc.
