Well after a stressful few days I am happy with the outcome! My female monitor was looking very gravid but unusually thin so I had concerns. I haven't seen her eat in at least 2 months, not so much as a piece of food. This is common for a gravid monitor but not from so early on. I had concerns of her being egg bound. I therefor got hold of my reptile vet for some advice on how to deal with it and got the meds but was hesitant to whether it's to early. I got her scanned and we saw she was full of eggs but they looked like duds. I was going to be happy with them just being out so she can start eating again.
I called Bushviper for some info and was given good advice to separate them and tube her calcium. Not sure why I didn't do it sooner but it might be due to the fact that I don't have space anywhere for more animals especially Monitors. Anyway I made a plan and luckly it was only hours before she started laying. Thanks for talking me into waiting and making space plans Bushviper!
I set up a night vision camera inside her hide so I would see what she gets up to and know when she has laid. I must say I am so glad I had this little bit of kit bought from Game. Was so nice to watch things unfold and when a fertile egg was laid in the open I could just run outside and grab it before it got damaged.
Here is the result of taking in all the options and I am glad the least invasive one.
Now the 6 months of waiting starts and I hope to pull them all through but I know from last time it's not always so easy. Last year she laid 30 duds and 6 fertile and this year it's 23 duds and 10 fertile. Hopefully I can get her closer to a full clutch in the future but the male or males might need to perform better. She has started eating again and also eat some of her dud eggs.
I am pretty sure my new male fathered these but I am wondering if it can be retained sperm from last year? I did see him try a lot but never get it right. Then again I was around 24/7.
