Koggelmander ID Umhlanga

Postby tobiasf » Mon Mar 02, 2015 10:30 am

Hi All,

My wife and I was on the beach and I caught this Koggelmander on the beach side on a wall and released it afterwards. This little critter was very active. On its lower jaws scales it had lime green colour. What koggelmander is this?

Can you get permits for these guys or is it only possible for snakes?

Thanks

I'd hazard a guess that it is Agama atra atra - Southern rock agama

I think it's a female Southern Tree Agama, Acanthocercus atricollis.

I guess you could theoretically get permits for them, but due to the reliance on sunlight, they would not be very easy to keep and you would have to do your research long before.

Definitely Acanthocercus atricollis.

Westley, how does the theory work then ? You will never be issued permits for wild caught specimens, that's how I understand it. So how does any species get introduced to the hobby legally, such as the above ?
tobiasf, that is a 'blue headed agama'. Of all the local agama species, their colours certainly take first place, breeding males are absolutely gorgeous.

Predator, with the laws slowly changing, things will change soon, but KZN has always been a bit of a loophole.

Example: I stay in KZN and collect WC specimen in KZN (or other provinces) and the animals become part of my collection in KZN. Then a friend in, for instance, Gauteng says he wants my WC animals. I can then apply for a transport/export permit for the WC animal because they are legal in KZN.

Then my mate in Gauteng simply takes that transport/export permit to NAtCon in Gauteng and gets his permit. Easy as that.

This is how things have been done for years. This is also how WC animals are exported to other countries.

Yes that's what I figured, but then there is the issue of the keeping/captivity permit, which is not the same as an import/export permit ? How does one get around that ?

I have never kept indigenous in Gauteng so I am not 100% up to date with how the system works, but I think once you have the export permit from KZN it is fairly easy to apply for your captivity permit.

That loophole is closing fast. The new act will make it illegal to keep any native species without a permit in KZN.
