I have caught numerous V. albigularis near Pretoria with black throats exactly like the one pictured above.

I have my doubts about all these "sub-species" specially if the characteristics which seperate them are so vague.

Gonicephalus doriae

I was also suspicious of all the differences, till I got a "white" throat from tz. They are def different, attitude, body shape, colour etc.

I am sure they will start looking at these beasts dna soon and hopefully have some answers. I just need some sa white throats on permit..... Hint hint hint

I agree with BV, they look very similar. I'm almost certain they would easily hybridise.

"Gonicephalus" - that sounds like a nasty STD. Incredible lizards, more mouth than anything else!

By the same token, brown house snakes vs cape house snakes... They cross, but still are two species.

What is weird is that the same stuff is being studied over and over in the usa... Ad nauseum, while there are huge questions in african herps that are being adressed at a snails pace. We should offer usa grad students an opp to visit and write up some of these subjects.
Lee grismer has been in the south china sea islands for the past 5 or 6 years, and has described 30 odd new species!! When I offered him a trip to sa, he said he might come this year....

Cheers don

Here are some pics of my "grey throat". It is a white throat monitor but does not have a white throat either.
