Bad shed. Need help

Bad shed. Need help

Postby Lillypod » Mon Feb 25, 2013 4:19 pm

What can cause my house snake to be shedding in bits and pieces?
Usually after a shed I soak her to remove the extra pieces of skin (only one or 2 small pieces).

History:
I only got her around mid December 2012, I do not know her age, but she is 1.2 meters long. She was owned by a young boy who didn't want snakes anymore (he wanted to spend more time surfing) so he gave his house snake and corn snake to me and her back was broken apparently many years ago and she has some scarring where the vet fixed her back. She is nice and fat and well taken care off. The first month or so she didn't want to eat and then she had a horrible shed, the tank looked like a snake skin exploded in there. She then started to eat again, but refused a meal last week and she shed over the weekend. Can the broken back contribute to the bits and pieces sheds? Or does she need vitamins? We don't have a reptile vet in Richards Bay, but we have a vet that is very willing to help and learn so I usually use him...

Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you

I can't think that the kinked back has something to do with the shedding, but what you could try is to mist the cage now and then and when the BHS is in the blue you can mist the cage daily, see if it helps
as long as you keep quiet, no one will notice that your dumb

Will try the next time, thanks, she usually gets soaked daily when in shed as well, so I'll mist the cage too.

Just make sure the cage has a big water bowl that she can soak in. What substrate do you have? I think that is your problem.

She has a big bowl, using newspaper, but the previous owner used corn cob... Going to put in a moist hide and see if that helps, if not I'll ask for some more advice again. Thanks for all the help so far.

The corn cob is the killer. Her next shedding will be fine if she is on newspaper. The amount of humidity you have where you live should be fine. A moist hide will not do any harm as long as it is not dirty and she does not spend all her time in there.

Well it is a small world, the person that gave the housie to the person I got her from contacted me via bbm (from here), anyway she says the housie is about 4 years old and she got her when she had a big kink in her back and was very thin (from someone else), but obviously made a great recovery.
