Totally Unexpected

Totally Unexpected

Postby rolandslf » Wed Feb 13, 2013 9:08 am

I was called yesterday afternoon at about 15h25 to catch a Mozambique Spitting Cobra, on the Estate where I work. While I have caught one member of this species on the Estate before over a 5 year period, I was seriously doubtfull.

Imagine my dismay when, on arrival, I find not a Mozzie, but rather a Forest Cobra. Yip, you're right, he is a bit out of his natural range, must have hijacked a car or something to get where he was. He raised up, hooded and charged me three times, but I did get him safely captured and bagged.

The Estate Management did not want him kept overnight on the Estate, due to inadequate holding facilities.
The 4 Ladies in my Lift Club, would not get into the car with the snake in it.
I then took the snake and handed it over to Jason Arnold.

Once Jason had it, we sexed it, turns out to be a Male and I estimate it to be in the 1.5 to 1.6 meter range.
I have some pics taken with my Cell Phone of Jason holding him.

Nice find Roland! I am presuming it was caught in Westville/Pinetown? If so this is the second one I have heard of from that area.

Nope, caught in Mount Edgecombe. They are hardly ever found this far South, normally only as far down as the Ballito Area.

I am still amazed why the people (especially in Durban it seems) like using a two finger grip when necking. Slippery powerful snakes like cobras can pull and twist so easily. I far rather prefer a three finger grip with the forefinger on the top of the head. I suppose whatever you feel comfortable with is fine.
