Taking DNA samples

Taking DNA samples

Postby Jamster » Sun Oct 20, 2013 9:22 am

A couple of weeks ago I found out that a couple of herpetologists and scientists are sampling South African puff adder DNA among a few other species. So I have started taking in my call out puff adders for scale clippings. Here are a couple of pics of the first 2 I took in for scale clippings.

You need to look into far narrower pipes for snakes of that girth. I was under the impression the DNA for the South African puff adders was completed. Who are you sending the clippings to?

Lol, I put the snakes in a thicker tube and then let them crawl throught the tube into narrower and narrower tubes. The snakes are often reluctant to enter a narrow confined space. I work the diameter of the tubes down more and more until its a perfect fit.

Its for Wolfgang and a couple other herpetologists. They are comparing the genetic varitions withn different locations accross SA. Apparently so far the cape region has a far higher genetic variation than others within south africa. I am going to try and supply about 50 samples from the PE area.

Okay that sounds like it will work.

Glad to see the samples are going to the same institute so that we dont have so many differing results which could be because of different equipment and techniques.
