Nice Big N. nigricollis Soyo Angola

Nice Big N. nigricollis Soyo Angola

Postby Warren Klein » Fri Oct 12, 2012 7:10 pm

Good day SA Reptiles,

I took these pictured last week on the 5th of October and thought I would share this impressive specimen with you. This is the largest Naja nigricollis I have personally come across here in Angola. He was a male and weighed 1489g ; SVL: 1520mm ; TL: 1760mm and he could really soak you with venom!

I really like this pic in particular for some reason?

I did not manage to capture the venom spray as I had hoped for. I could not find any willing volunteers to act as a target!

This cobra regurgitated it's last meal soon after capture, a Psammophis sp.

Hope you enjoy

Regards

Man...you have just had one of the most awesome posts I have seen on the site.
Thank you so much for sharing that catch and the great photos.
I must say the 3rd down is my favourite (but they are all really top stuff).
I was actually speaking with some people the other day about this species and how few and far between we hear about them haha.
Keep these great post coming...

I enjoyed it thanks.

What a great series of photos!
its a impressive snake, and a real fatty check the girth on that.

I dont want to know how bad a bite would be from one of these snakes. Photography of this species is a two man / woman job. You still got some really nice shots.

I dont want to know what the regurge smelled like.

You are right BV, but a luxury I didn’t have at the time and I was not going to let him go before getting a few images. The regurged snake smelled like roses compared to the dog the big python regurgitated in a previous post of mine which I think you also commented on.... you could have smelled that one all the way in Pretoria!

Hi I am working on a childrens wildlife video book "Tales of the full Moon" it's about the KNP animals and is an edu entertainment book, I need a good hi res of a spitting cobra for the chapter with a vervet monkey called Merlin Monkey. The book was written by a wildlife vet Sue Hart based in White River My email address is info@trevorbarrettphoto.co.uk

Your Naja nigricollis is perfect, I will be cutting out to be in a shot of a vervet monkey. The Into chapter is on Vimeo or Youtube
