Naja sputatrix feeding advice

First all hello for everyone.

I am a cobra keeper for a nearly ten years. I am experienced with monocled cobra, king cobra, spectacled cobra and Phillippine cobra.

I got five wild caught N.sputatrix (not a N. siamensis) from Indonesia 3 weeks ago but they refuse to eat. I tried mice and frogs even alive and dead.

I am unexperiented with this species and I couldn't get enough info on internet.

Do you know about what is the their main diet on the wild?

I have never had any cobra refuse food. Usually this species feeds readily on rodents. Possibly try getting captive bred ones in future.

Take them to a reptile vet for pathogens and internal parasites.
Plenty of wild caught reptiles from Asia and surrounding areas are infested with parasites.


I agree captive bred is the way to go.

Have you tried them on frozen thawed day old chicks? I brought in a few of these snakes years ago from Indonesia and all of them ate day old chicks with no problems and went onto rat pups and mice very soon.

Thank you for your reply. I couldn't get day old chicks but I get ten days old quail (size similar to day old chick) and they refuse it. Do you think is there any differences between chick and quail so have I to get chick?

And I tried it alive not frozen thawed.

They will smell different. A frozen thawed day old chick does have a unique scent.

Are day old chicks their natural diet intake in Indonesia????

Don't you think that if so many as 5 are not eating it is a parasitic problem???

What I have been researching and personal experience with wild caught animals is that they either thrive or die ( or need immediate vet inspections???)

I am learning every day and believe this topic to be very relevant to many breeders and keepers

Try to see if they will take fish or fish scented mice.

I have used fish scenting on multiple occasions and it has proven effective each time.

Yes chicks are part of their diet in Indonesia. Years ago I used to import a fair number of snakes from Indonesia, and the exporter told me that Retics and Amethystine Pythons were a big problem in some areas as they used to eat all the villagers fowls, and it got to a stage where the villagers were locking their fowls up in huts at night, and he said the Amethystines particularly, were actually forcing their way into the huts through any small opening, and often could not get out again.He told me that the everyone kept fowls in the villages and there were cases of KIng cobras eating chicks in some areas. I had quite a number of adult Waglers pitvipers that loved day old chicks and every specie of snake I imported from there ate day old chicks if they could swallow them.

Hi friends;

Yesterday night one of my snakes ate frog and one of them ate day old chick. Tonight I will try fish for other three of my cobras.

My vet get fecal sample and he said that some worm eggs in the feces. But he don't want to use any drug before feeding. His suggestion is waiting for another two week. If no accepting during this time he will tube feed with drugs.

No one eat fish.
