It did not look like a Tuinslang aka Hose pipe to me.

That is a beautiful Bitis nasicornis ;-)

I know this is an old thread but this nicely illustrates that even after several years and the publication of a paper detailing a supposed 5 way division in Mr Hoser's "Journal", a google search for "Bitis hoserae" still only throws up a small number of "hits" all pretty much originating from Hoser himself. Its good to see that people aren't taking any notice of his alternative amateur 'taxonomy" ....... Taxonomic revision ought to be left to real Scientists !

While we're on the topic of taxonomy - I read something the other day that said all large Bitis species are in the sub-genus Macrocerastes? Can anyone confirm or deny that? Wouldn't that make it technically be more correct to call it Macrocerastes nasicornis or Macrocerastes arietans etc?

That would be crazy!

Cerastes are known to be oviparous vipers so to call the larger Bitis Macrocerastes would simply confuse people into thinking they are oviparous too.

Ridiculous.

wadekilian, I recognize Macrocerastes as a subgenus, based on the obvious morphological and molecular evidence.
However to save him posting we'll assume Paul Rowley won't, as he automatically opposes anything I say or do.
However I should note that Macrocerastes is not my creation. I merely accept the taxonomic proposal and the correct nomenclature follows.

Wow, I wish I was "advanced" enough to be able to keep something as incredible as this!
The kiss originated when the first male reptile licked the first female reptile, implying in a subtle, complimentary way that she was as succulent as the small reptile he had for dinner the night before.
