need to find geckos

need to find geckos

Postby dodge » Wed Nov 16, 2011 10:36 pm

Hi all.
I just got my self a beautiful white lipped tree viper
But she is not interested at all in pinkies. So
I need to get her some geckos quick.
But I cannot find any geckos any where.
I stay in jhb on a golf course so plenty of trees
Dams, nature etc. I have tried leaving on the outside
Light but nothing ?? Either I have really bad luck
Or not looking in the right places.
Can anyone pls help ?
Thanks

Why not try scenting pinks with frogs?
How long have you had this white lip for?

Most will take pinks via some teasing or at least pink parts have you tried that?

I never knew scenting with a frog would work
I will give it ago.
About a week now. I have teased her a lot.
She tags the pinks everytime, but does not
Eat at all. Tried leaving her in the dark teasing her
But just not keen. Pink parts ? You mean like it
Leg or head etc.
Thanks for the tips.

Get a pink ( Frozen thawed) and cut it up into smaller parts , l basically quarters and continue to tease it with those.

Eventually it will take it, try use the tail tapping method it usually is fail safe.

Hold the pinkie part inn front of the snakes head and with a another pair of forceps or feeding tongs gently squeeze / tail the tail the snake will strike out at what ever is in front of it.

Do that before looking for geckos or even scenting frogs.

You can also try using longer strips of ox-heart. It wiggles like a wet frog and they get far more energy out of this than a quarter of a pink. Then you can switch to pinky parts or pinkies once they have realised how they are supposed to eat.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I won't stress to much , it's one week, some of my vipers took 2 weeks - 1month before eating, because they need time to adjust, How old is your viper if it's a yearling it means that it already ate pinks, so there's no reason for scenting
as long as you keep quiet, no one will notice that your dumb

I agree with Urucone. My viper did not eat the first three weeks. Even now he eats week in and week out, but every now and then, he does not touch the food, he tags it only.

Thanks guys for the tips. I got a pink yesterday scented it with a lizard I finally found
I got a tip from my near buy pet shop that I should stick the pink in a tub under
A low branch in the tank, cause the supposedly like to hang from a branch and then
Strike and eat. So aftet teasing her for like 30 min and nothing I stuck it in a tub in the tank
And within 2 min she was chowing it ! So that def works !
So all good and thanks for all the help !
