Clint in Gauteng you would need permits for any indigenous reptile.

Dont be fooled into buying Namib ground geckos and being told they are "exotic" and don't require a permit. Numerous petshops have been selling these guys illegally because they did not know better.

If the reptiles are coming from someone who has bred them or already has them on permit then obtaining a permit is much easier.

If they or their parents are not already on a permit then your chances are virtually zero.

So how does one get a nice collection together?

I dont want to break the law but it seems that is the only way! How does one get in touch with ppl that breed indigenous species that will be able to supply permit.

Sorry for all the question its just that I want to do things right the first time!

Well hang around on a decent reputable website that has knowledgeable people on their forums (like this one, which is probably the only one) and see what people keep or breed.

Mostly the people posting here will have their animals legally and then you can acquire babies from them.

The risk if you do it illegally is fairly high. You can never sell your babies at decent prices because they will be black market animals. If you get caught they will confiscate everything you have and can revoke any permits that you may have acquired before then.

Nothing will come to you overnight so you must be patient. Gain experience with some of the exotic geckos first and then the indigenous ones will be easier to keep when you eventually get them.

I remember to have read this one:

"It is common in South Africa, where it is one of the largest gecko species. It tends to explore buildings and is considered a household pest."
