Challenging spider ID

Postby rone » Tue Dec 03, 2013 6:54 am

Hi all,

I wonder if you could assist with an ID of the spider in the attached pic. I realise it’s very poor quality but unfortunately it was sent to me by my grandparents who were more interested in seeing the spider into the garden than taking better a better pic!

I’m hoping that the shape of the abdomen with its unique ‘tapered’ end and the very thin tips of its legs might provide some insight into what it could be.

Thanks!

Looks like a Rain spider having a meal.

Legs look a little too skinny at the ends for a rain spider. Would need better lighting to see the colouration to give an accurate ID.

I also thought rain spider until I had a closer look at the legs!

Pity there wasn't a better pic!

A severely dehydrated or starving rain spider .
Or wolf spider but the abdomen still looks wrongish.

Attached new pic - slightly better and shows stripes on legs.

Hi guys,
I'm not an expert on spiders at all but the way the legs are positioned and the shape of the abdomen leads me to think it could be a flattie/flatty.

I agree with Bazza now, its the best fit for a Flattie.

Still needs better light for an ID. Maybe try with a flash.
Could be a flattie or rain spider. Not a scorpion spider though.
