Scorpion Identification

Postby RyanK » Mon Feb 10, 2014 11:55 am

Hi, new user, be gentle.

This stung a family member on the toe this morning, 20 minutes after the shoe was put on. I am northern Zimbabwe, in a long-established residential area.

From looking around the forum, my very amateur guess is some form of uroplectes, but I'm unable to narrow it down further.

Any advice on what to expect in terms of symptoms, and what to do, would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Ryan

Can't 100% confirm ID, but I suspect this is Lychas burdoi.

Even if I am incorrect with the specific ID, I highly doubt the sting is life threatening...Painful and uncomfortable? Yes! But not dangerous.

I would say Uroplectes sp, most probably U.flavoviridis. L.burdoi is much more cryptically coloured than this specimen.

Thanks guys. Wasn't too concerned about life-threatening, but wanted to at least reassure the victim they wouldn't die!

Trying to convince the wife to keep him, but it's not going too well!
