ID on spider please :D

Postby Zeiphex » Wed Sep 09, 2015 11:47 pm

I came across this guy while feeding the horses tonight - he was hanging out in the gutter. I've never seen one like this before (he feels squishy - I couldn't resit touching him), and wondering what he is. He's about 5cm long. I'm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. Any ideas?

That is a female trapdoor spider if I am not mistaken... Family Ipiopinae? Very cool find! Where I used to live the males always came out in dozens after the rain to look for females. Quite rare to find a female as they usually just sit in their burrows. They are considered harmless... Although I am not shure on the ID so please don't touch it befor this is confirmed ;)

@reptile - Oh my word, it would appear that you're spot on here. I've looked up trapdoor spiders and this is without a shadow of a doubt one of them! Funny that, I didn't even know we had them here :P I'm not sure which species this one is yet, but definitely trapdoor spider. Thanks for the ID! :D

Pleasure!! They are hard to spot, their trap doors match perfectly with the ground... The only reason I found one was because a male was trying to pry one open. Keep a look out for more as they usually live in dense colonies:-)
