captive flap neck chameleon's

Postby kyle mcdonald » Fri Jul 16, 2010 5:12 pm

hay there to all. :smt006

i'm very intersted in keeping indigenous chameleons, mainly flap necks but i live in jhb.

i know that permits are required but im confused about whether i can keep one.

so firstly is it even possible for me to buy flap neck chameleons and do so on permit?

and if so what would the cageing requirements be?

i am familiar with chameleons i would just like to add some flap neck's to my collection.

any information would be greatly appreciated. :) :) :)

thanks. :)

I don't believe it's possible for you to legally obtain them.

Further more getting a Captive bred animal even more difficult.
Organized crime comes in more forms than one.

Aside from the various legal issues, there are two other consdierations:
1. Flapnecks have a deserved reputation for not adapting well to captivity - stories of people keeping them as kids are normally semi wild ones that were returned to the wild after a few months.
2. Any wild chameleon that is added to collection is very likely to be carrying parasites, which it will pass on. It is likely that, unless you utilise a knowledgeable vet, you will not treat your wild chameleon sufficiently with the few things that you can easily buy. There are some parasites (blood, guts, etc) that will require repeated careful attention and specific treatments. You may think that your chameleon is THE one that is parasite free - it won't be. However, it may have a natural immunity that will hide the problems. Captive bred chameleons will not have that same ability and you could lose your collection within days.

Is it really worth the risk?

@ Kyle.

I agree with David Hagget (chameleons). If you want a flap neck on permit it can be done....... Tough but it can be done

I just submitted an article to the Ultimate Exotics Magazine on chameleon legalities with regard to indigenous and exotics in South Africa. The article will only be out in Sept/Oct issue but worth a read as it highlights some of the common misconceptions with regard to laws.

I had Flap Necks as a child and they are very hardy, friendly chameleons (in my opinion), last thing you want to do is keep them illegaly as it is always better to stay legal in your hobby.

What would the misconceptions of laws be?

I think everyone knows that it is illegal to keep the indegenous animals of S.A, by telling them its illegal to keep them will not stop them from keeping the chameleons. I caught a flap neck in KZN when I was 6 and I had a teenager on the beach tell me it was illegal to keep them, I knew it was illegal but I wasnt going to let that stop me from keeping it.
It escaped out of its box later on, just by the way.

Ask the advertisers to provide you with a permit and see what they say... The one in Gauteng will need a permit to keep it, never mind sell it. The one in Durban will need an export permit to sell it to anyone outside KZN. All for a quick buck... and if I am not mistaken, the dwarf chameleon is being kept in some sort of aquarium? Makes my blood boil. In KZN you can go grab one in the bush and sell it without getting into trouble. Hopefully that will change soon, if it has not happened yet (where do I tag you in a SAReptiles post Arno, or Rolf? :) )

I Have reached the one only, The lady has a Flap Neck Chameleon Male for sale. I have contacted Gumtree to remove the adverts as well as gave the contact details to a company called FreeMe who contacted Nature Conservation.

I hate it when people do this but most people are not aware about the legal issues around keeping indigenous animals and reptiles.

Im Awaiting confirmation from FreeMe on what will happen next.

Just another Update, SANBI contacted me and advised me that they have given this to the local Law enforcement of the provinces.
According to SANBI the midlands Dwarf has had a Status change and is becoming more endangered as well..
