Chameleon eating habits

Chameleon eating habits

Postby Beata » Mon May 21, 2012 12:42 pm

Hi there. I got a chameleon given to me by someone who picked it up in a busy street in PTA. I own other reptiles, so I decided that if this chameleon looks wild, I'll let it go, and if it looks captive-bred, I'll look at keeping it/donating it to a zoo. Anyway, it ate crickets, mealworms, supaworms and beetles out
of my hands( she's fully grown and was very fat-not gravid-when I got her). My dragon has also slowed down with eating with the colder weather, but I have a garden patch where I let her sun during the day, and she has started licking all the small white stones in the garden. Any ideas as to why she would do this? Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks, Beata

I believe she is drinking from them, Chameleons don't drink water out of bowls readily.
So they lick leaves and stones to get any moisture off it.

Mist the tree the cham is in and check if it licks the water drops from the tree.
If its a Chameleon out of the wild it will be best to let it go near where it was found.

She could be looking for water or she could be looking for calcium as well. Dust her food with calcium in any case. Let a sprinkler wet the tree / bush before you place her in it. That way she gets enough fluids if she wants them.
