Are both adult specimens? Those look like two different sub-species, the first one being A.b.taylori and the second A.b.bilineatus. The one exotic you don’t want to be bitten by.

Now you will have to try and pair them up which is not so easy. These animals are way cheaper in South Africa than in the US or Europe. I have no idea why. They have a nasty venom and are not to be messed with. I was recently offered babies at about R700 each.

These are two subspecies so dont keep them together as they look like opposite sexes and could actually mate with each other and should produce offspring with an even nastier venom.

Question. In comparison to something like a Crotalus atrox and/or Agkistrodon piscivorus, what would a bite from one of these two be like?

Think this sums it up the best:

Bites from A.bilineatus have caused human fatalities (Bogert and Oliver, 1945), but envenomation by this species has not been reported in detail. According to one report, one of six cases required amputation. Loveridge (1928a) reported that a horse bitten by this species in Oaxoca, Mexico, died within 20 minutes, and Rodas (1938) reported that a Guatemalan horse died less than an hour after being bitten by an individual 25cm in total length….

Alvarex del toro (1983) described the frightening effects of the potent proteolytic venom, which causes extensive local necrosis and destroys blood vessels, leading in some cases to death or loss of limbs. Solorzano et al. (1999) reported that the venom elevates hemorrhagic, hemolytic, and myotoxic activities. A snake from the Yucatan Peninsula only 30cm in TL was reported to have caused the death of a women within a few hours (Gaige, 1936).

That should give you something to think about. That is why I said they have a nasty venom. To kill a horse you have to pack quite a punch.
