On the hunt for substrate again.

On the hunt for substrate again.

Postby gekosin » Wed Nov 27, 2013 12:29 pm

Hi all,

Once again I am here looking for advice on what substrate to use for our small collection of corns (in all honesty I would love to just use news paper but the lady of the house doesnt see this as a good idea)

I have used the bark chips and as previously mentioned tried the peach pit ( awesome to clean but does seem a bit harsh on the snakes if they move around on it alot)

I have been searching around and basically all that is left is e-mulch would this suffice for the corns and any ideas where i can get some in the Boksburg area? Will need a large quantity for the tanks.

I have mailed EyeLash to see if he has (think i remember him advertising at some point).

Any advise would be great. Thanks!

I use peat moss for all my snakes, It's R9 a block, you get a lot out of one brick. It's super absorbent, easy to clean and readily available at most nurseries. The're quite a few places in Benoni that sell it aswell.

Kenaf or aspen in my opinion. Aspen is a bit hard to find and is quite expensive, but there is a kenaf supplier somewhere in KZN and they do deliveries through post. The kenaf can be washed and reused as well.

This is how kenaf looks:

I'm currently using Coco peat(ground up coir), the stuff is super absorbant and easy to spot clean.
I can also say that it never seems to rot or mould, its really inert.

Larger nursuries seem to stock it and will also probaly stock the E-mulch its all by the same company "Culterra".

Thanks for the info, we currently use Coco peat for our spiders and I do agree that it is really easy to keep clean but doesn't it affect the humidity? Isn't it very messy when it comes to doing a full clean?

Yip thats its downfall its a real pain to do a full clean, When I need to clean it all out I make it nice and damp then just scoop it out or use my DIY wet vaccuum.
It does not absorb water from the air so humidity is not really a problem.
