how cool are these snakes . I saw a few pics of them on a photo gallery recently and i think they are beauties . Anyone else seen any pics ???

There was this guy I used to know in Cologne that only kept and bred designer Cottonmouths. Leucistics, albinos and a whole bunch of other stuff that had yet to be named. His name is somewhat predictably Fritz something or other and I found him on one of the bigger U.S. sites, possibly Kingsnake.com. I unfortunately lost his details and a whole bunch of breath taking photos when my computer crashed. We got in touch when he expressed interest in a little female I bred out a few years ago.

what are they like as captives?? is it similair to a copper like behaviour and husbandry requirements?

Not going to take over this post, but in the interest of promoting our breeding, I'd just like to answer the question:


Cottonmouths are exciting to keep. In the same way that getting shot at is exciting. They are mostly unpredictable with a very short fuse and a far more destructive venom than Copperheads, although nowhere near as toxic as their Mexican cousins, the Cantils. They grow to much larger dimensions than the other two and a large Florida Cottonmouth is a sight to behold. Lengths of around 180cm are not too rare, although I have only seen this in South African Snake parks and on overseas websites. They are famous for their poor hygeine, willingness to kill each other and the ability to digest rotten food ( much like our Rinkhals ). They also make terrific 'dustbins' when one is cleaning out unwanted food the next morning in the rest of the snake room. The main disadvantage is their insistence on soiling the water bowl/s every day, whether they need a dump or not. Otherwise they make delightful pets and one can spend hours just watching them get up to their crazy shenanigans. They are very easy to breed and eat anything.
