Rat Rack project

Postby ClintonT » Sun Jan 10, 2010 8:47 am

Hi all,

Thought I would just post a pic of my newly completed Rat rack. I would first like to thank a friend in a million who took it upon himself to follow through on a design I had on my "wishlist". After lots of hard work and countless rivets the "Rat Palace" was completed and my feeder rats residence was taken to a new level. Hope you like.

Too nice! Well done.
What nozzles did you use for the water?

Awesome Clinton. Well done.

Looks great.
I was also interested in the water mechanisms?

Those top few racks are those for rats or mice?

Hi all,

Thanks for the comments.
For the water system I managed to source some of these veriflo valves locally:
Image
They work well once you have adjusted them, I do think that one needs to keep an eye on them and check every now and then that they are not leaking or stuck. Leaking was the initial problem that I had with them.

The rack is only for Rats. The bottom bins are my breeder bins housing the males and females. The other bins are used for pregnant/suckling moms and weaners.

If you are using vlaves then dril a hole in the side at bottom of each tub. If the valve get stuck in the open position then it does not drown all the occupants. Pulling out a tub which is heavy and has drowned rats which then tip and fall on you is an experience you only needed once before drilling holes in each tub.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I have two racks in total. I use the white bins for the breeding groups and medium rats. Breeding groups 1-5 ratio.
The clear tubs are for the females with babies and weaners to small rats. The weaners to small rats I keep 10 to 12 per tub. I change substrate often when there are high numbers to keep them clean.
