Robin, Buck Rogers, Clsmith we are already 4 that want a club here on the westrand. Cornilias and beardie&box are here too. That makes 6.

How many members do we need before we can start our own club? We can invite Bushviper and Snakes4Africa to come out to show us how to get it started.

Clsmith, seems we have the time to get the ideas rolling. I can not get this pm thing going so be free to email dewetsnakes@gmail.com

How about a get together? Just to meet and discuss possibilities.

Maybe a THA meeting here in the West Rand once every few months might also be a viable option instead of starting off a new branch?

CL Smith I am sure that could be a possibility. I will discuss it with the other members and see if we can come up with a solution for this problem.

Are there any Herp clubs in the North West?

I Live in Brits and Work in Harties.
In a short time i have realised that there are a few people here interested in Reptiles and also collect. I just think it would be nice to even have a meeting once a month or somthing.... If there is one and ive missed it somehow, appologies.

Also i would like to know how i go about obtaining a permit. My local vet has been helping me alot and he also does physical checks on all new snakes i get.

Thanks in advance for all the help...

I am also in the Westrand and my husband is also very keen. Perhaps we should all chat at the picnic on the 31th of Jan?

I live on the border of the West Rand and the northern suburbs of Joburg so I would also be keen :)

Myself and Reptilecorner has discussed the THA Westrand idea and I think that this is long over due. I am also willing to contribute my time to this as I feel quite strongly about this. So if you are interested too, we will be discussing it at the picnic on the 31st.

Yes, Corne and I have been talking in depth about this and we will be discussing this even more so at the picnic. I am willing to sacrifice all my time with Corne to get this off the ground.
So if anyone else does want to get involved it would be good to join us on the 31st of January.

Good evening. I have a 17 year old that would love to study herpetology. I was wondering if any of you would be able to share some information with me. How much would it cost? We live in Natal so something in the area. Could it be done through the post? How long does it take to study to become a herpetologist. Do field trips and equipment come with a course like this? I would greatly appreciate your input.
Thank you Kindly

Hi Christi
There are two roads to Herpetology, both of which can be studied at most universities - Nature Conservation or Bachelor of Science (Zoology). The undergraduate work is very generic and when you get to Honours level or above you can start speciliasing in Herpetology and looking for a university that has a Herp section (Wits and Stellenbosch to my knowledge).
This has been discussed on the forum before

Hey Guys and Gals.

I have been in contact with Chameleon Village Snake Park as wel as North West Nature Conservation.
We are going to start up a club and have meetings once a month at the snake park in Hartbeespoort.
We are also arranging for Nature Conservation to come over and give a talk on how to obtain permits and also the Laws for North West regarding Keeping Snakes and the Permits required.

We would like to get a Idea of how many people would be interested in joining the club, so please send me a PM or Email with your contact details.

Also, we would like some Ideas on what you would like to see, do or learn with regard to Reptiles. We have a huge variety of Exotic and Indiginous Reptiles that we can use for demonstartions and talks.
Courses on Snake handling and First Aid also available at the park.

Thanks for looking

I'm also on the West Rand and find it difficult to get to Pretoria for THA meetings. I'm all for a club around here. I'm the CEO of a Nonprofit Organisation and we have 8,5 hectare of property next to Usambara on the N14 near Pinehaven and Silver Star Casino, ideal for meetings and coarses with a huge empty dam that could be used, as well as small auditorium with sound and projector facilities. All for free! We are developing a "Mini-Farm" for skills training and education (including conservation). Any suggestions are welcome.
