Baby Copperhead to Adult Copperhead

Baby Copperhead to Adult Copperhead

Postby Pelamis » Mon Sep 06, 2010 8:30 pm

Today I saw a baby (age unknown) at a Petshop. The snake is appr. 20 - 25cm but is very dark grey in colour and not nearly the colour of an adult Copperhead. How long does it take before the snake will show adult Copperhead colour?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Pelamis

My copperhead was very brightly colored since I got mine at 6 months of age. The coloration you are describing might be because the snake is in the process of shedding its skin. I have read that they actually get duller in color as they get older - maybe the other guys here can shed some more light on this.

The only difference I can see in mine is green coloration on the tip of the tail is fading as the snake is growing. Mine is about 20 months old now and the green tip is almost completely gone.

Here's a pic of my Copperhead when she was about 14 months old and about 2 weeks prior to shedding. Notice the dull parts on her body.

Hope it helps.

(Sorry for the poor quality - used a "mik en druk")

Hi Van2

Many thanks for your reply. No I doubt if that one was getting ready to shed. His / her body colour was just to bright. Awesome snake you've got there. Even with the "mik and druk" you managed to still get a nic photo.

If a Southern Copperhead gives birth, are the babies the same colour as the adults?

The babies never look the same as the adults. Yes there should be a number of people breeding Copperheads in Gauteng this year. Mine were mating today as well so who knows.

Thanks Eyelash and BV. Eyelash, I will most probably be looking for a baby whose parents I can also view.
