What's In Here?

Postby Westley Price » Thu Jan 06, 2011 5:16 pm

Hey guys

I recently acquired this snake for a bargain. The owner was selling it as an albino Sinaloan Milksnake, but upon first glance I realized that there's more to it. Plus I quite liked the bit of striping on her neck.

What do y'all think is the make-up of this animal?

I thought it might be albino Nelson x Sinaloan. I asked BVs opinion and he recons there might be some Mex Mex in there.

Roland, time for a joint venture ;)

Westley, I do not think that there is any King Snake or Corn Snake influence here. The cross would have to be pure Milk Snake going by head shape, banding etc.
Having said this, it would in all probability be exactly as you called it, Sinaloan x Albino Nelson.
What sex is it?
If it was mine, the next step would be a cross with an Albino King.

I will still put my money on a Ruthveni crossed with a Mex Mex. I have seen numerous mex -mexs with a stripe on the neck. Their markings also do not go right around the belly.

After spending more time looking at her, I like BVs opinion more and more.

As mentioned, her banding does not extend all the way down her sides, which could mean one of the parents was a species with saddles instead of banding.

And as Roland mentioned, the head shape and pattern still looks like 100% Lampropeltis.

And what is the most common Lampropeltis species with saddles? Mex Mex!

Roland, she is a female and should be breeding size by this coming season. My first choice would be to pair her up with a Reverse Okeetee.

Those offspring would be NUTS!

That would be a good cross. I think a GreyBanded King cross would also develop into something awesome.
We can always also try my Striped Albino King and see what develops with the striping she already has.

I'm just afraid the dominantly black (or pink in the albino form) from the Cal King is too overpowering, wasting all the banding influence from the Milk Snake.

I have a normal Mex Mex male which is also a possibility, but he's a bit big for her.

If you have a nice male creamsicle we can talk ;)

You could borrow my striped Sinaloan which I think has a slight Ruthvens influence. I think he is about her fighting size possibly a bit bigger. That would at least throw out some interesting hets. If you go the Pantherophis route then you still have to wait another generation and you have ugly babies to raise.

Of course I'd prefer your striped Sinaloan!

Last time I saw it, it was in the blue, but gorgeous nontheless.

Then we'd get some nice double hets and the next generation some possible striped albinos.

If you want to use him you can come fetch him. Either now or after winter does not matter to me. I would suggest you feed your female very well so long.

Ahh, baie dankie!

I'll come and get him after winter. I can even leave the female with you if that suits you beter, otherwise, I have more than enough space.

Thanx a million!

I wanted to give you the sinaloan and then Bushbaby reminded me that she is raising 3 other striped ones and was rather miffed that I was messing with her breeding programme.

At least we dont need him this year so I will feed him well till winter and then wait and see what he does. Hang on to your female as space here is a problem.

Haha, Bushbaby just shattered my dream ;)

I'll hang on to this girl until winter. This should make an interesting programme.

Thanx again BV.

Westley, I have been doing a bit of Thinking and Brain Busting. I reckon that the Striped Sinaloan is the only way to go to get the best f1 results. Now, when you get to the f2, or better still, f3 stage, all I can say is "WOW". If you are successfull with this project, you can put me on the list now for an f1 Female. I also have something up my sleeve, allbeit that I am going to wait 4 years for my f1 babies using your cross. I should have some very nice hybrids in 2012, but I will reveal all only after positive locks in 2011.
