A Great Day

A Great Day

Postby rolandslf » Fri Apr 29, 2011 9:05 am

Today for me is a great day.
Not only do I get to go on Leave, but even more importantly.
Deviant Exotics informed me this morning that I have won a Scorpion, Parabathus transvaalicus. It will arrive next week.

Now, after more than a few years in this hobby, in which I have only kept snakes, I win something for the first time ever.

I now get to expand on personal experience in the hobby as well as to learn all about a new animal and species.

Who knows, I might even get over my Spidey Phobia at this rate.

To Deviant Exotics and anyone associated with them on this Forum. A Million Thanks.

I will post pics on 23rd May when I return from leave.

Eish, A Spider. I suppose it is one way of being cured of a Phobia though.

It's our pleasure Roland! I'm glad that you are so happy with your scorpion, it's very nice being able to give something to someone that really appreciates it atleast! Enjoy the critter, and keep safe, they can move extremely quick when given the opportunity!

I dont think Roland has access to a computer while he is on leave. Possibly you should try to call him.

I am back from leave, and correct, I did not have access to the internet.
Yes my "Spitting Cobra" of the Scorpion Species arrived safely. These guys spit or spray their venom as well as injecting it.
My baby has had two meals in the about 3 weeks that I have him/her, and seems to be going into a molt at the moment.
I will post pics tomorrow.

Once again, to the guys and gals at Deviant Exotics. Very Many Thanks.

Here are the pics. The little bugger moves quickly and does not stay still to get good pics.
Here are the two best I managed to get.

Great!!! Good to see you have been researching them! I must say though, I have fair experience with this species, and have only seen them spray twice. In both instances the scorpions were HIGHLY agitated. Surprisingly, the spray, or droplets also did not travel much further than about 10cm or so, quite a disappointment I must admit. This however does not mean that one should not take caution!

I was wondering if other forum members have ever observed this behavior in Parabuthus, and if so, has it ever been captured on video or photograph perhaps? Would be interesting!

O yes, before I forget, the best way to "handle" them, or rather lets say transport from container to container, is to use a sponge on a stick, like the one I included a picture of. You get them in art shops. The smaller the scorpion, the thinner the stick preferably!

I thought I would post an updated pic of Scorpio as my wife has named him/her.
It doesn't seem to have grown much to me, but people tell me it is actually very fat.
Can the experts reveal a bit more to me.

And Home for the little critter.

Looking good Roland, just stay away from the sharp end, I've heard some unpleasant stories about the stings from this species, but for a responsible keeper like you it should'nt be a problem. These are very rewarding animals to keep and I hope it doesn't stop here for you.

Definitely only the beginning for me.
I already have a pair of Emperor's lined up.
I will also keep away from the sharp end, of this species anyway.
I got a bit of a tag from a baby Emperor, I would class that one with a bee sting.
