Illegal shipment found in the post

Postby Bushviper » Fri May 27, 2011 5:53 pm

Today an illegal shipment of snakes was intercepted by the post office. The snakes were identified, confiscated and taken to a safe place where they are now getting some water and decent heating. The temperatures in Johannesburg OR Tambo (where they were picked up) was close to zero degrees.

The snakes were being sent from Limpopo to Cape Town without any permits. It would have been possible to send them legally as the person receiving the parcel knows the law very well. Sending highly venomous snakes like these cobras is irresponsible and could have caused the death of a postal worker.

The post office has sophisticated scanners and they can detect live animals in transit. The days of posting animals is over people. It is not necessary to do that any more. From overseas it can now be done legally and between provinces the permits might take a few days but they can be obtained.

That all depends on the court what will happen to the animals. They can be returned, forfeited to the state or destroyed depending on what the magistrate decides. I have no idea if the case will be heard in Louis Trichardt, Kempton Park or Cape town.

Nice... Innocent animals may get destroyed because someone decided to take a short-cut.

BV, don't you need quarantine facilities to import from overseas, or from outside of the Republic? Or is that also a thing of the past?

Makes me sick when people try short cuts. Like Mehelya says: Innocent animals may get destroyed for someones greedness.

Nope you still have to quarantine any reptiles from outside the republic. There are a number of private quarantine facilities you can hire for the 30 days.

Boogy it was snouted cobras. I cannot think of a species of cobra of which there are more legal specimens in South Africa and are freely available. Why would you want wild caught illegal specimens?

The amount of times I've been to places in the Karro and someone has told me about some individual or another who has asked them to send all the snakes they find to them is unbelievable. Strangely enough most of them are guests on this forum. Although you have to wait 15 days for a permit in Gauteng and a couple everywhere else, it is definitely worth the wait.
