Is this an egg?

Postby Fugly » Tue Oct 04, 2011 5:47 pm

Good day

Can anyone explain with the following. According to what I have read this is not suppose to happen.
My two milks hooked on the 11/09/2011 she was very swollen. The swelling is a bit less now but you can see she is still heavy and swolen at the back.
She is just about to shed (if the hook was successfully) this should be her "pre egg lay" shed?

Today when I cleaned the cage I came across this. Is it a egg? if so why only one?
If you can see it is a odd long shape and it has like "ridges" on the side.

Why only the one? will there be more? I was under the impression that they will lay all at once.
Obviously that one that I did not see dried due to not enough humidity.

Are they kept together? and how big is it?
I think it could be a sperm plug because it doesn't look like an egg and it would be very weird for there to be only one egg.

The are in separate cages. It is about 3.5 to 4.5 cm in length and then about as round as n 10c coin.

Not if it is infertile, I had a brown house snake many years ago before I, same as you knew what it was, and she laid 1-3 eggs randomly, a sperm plug, according to me, dissolves not dry out.
Well, that's as far as my knowledge goes I still feel it is an egg, dried out one.

yeah, then that has to be an egg. Can it be that this one egg came out a bit early, before the "shell" was formed properly and before the rst of the eggs, by mistake? The rest should come soon.

I agree with that, might want to add a lay box weather they are fertile or not, if she becomes egg bound the chances of her dieing is very likely, but, on the other hand we cannot see the snake so it is all just speculation.

So the rest is on the way? Will it be days, weeks or will only time tell?
I have added the egg box, I will keep close eye on her 24/7.

This morning I found one more egg, looks a bit better then the first one and what seems to be a sperm plug. Googled some images (got some nasty ones) but the color and shape is more or less the same
Not sure if it came before or after the egg, but again only the one egg.

How long do I have to get the egg/s in a incubator for they go bad?

I think it is too early for her to be laying fertile eggs if they hooked on 11/09. That is only 25 days ago.
Fertile eggs should only be laid around the middle of November.
The pic you posted is of a slug(Infertile Egg)

So the second one will also be a slug. Will she do this until then?
And why is this happening?

The male mated with the female too late that time. Just keep her warm and hope she lays proper eggs. Let her slide over your fingers and try to feel bumps (eggs) as the moves. If she looks distressed and the eggs do not pop out then get a vet to have a look at her.

Pueblans are known to double clutch with ease so she could breed again straight after this round. Offer her food and SUPPLEMENT HER CALCIUM or you will run into problems.

Try to get better pictures with a size reference in the picture and then we can give a more informed opinion.

Thank you Bushviper

Just to confirm if I feel eggs should I apply a bit of pressure and they should pop out? or should I then just ensure that they come out over the next couple of days?
If not take her to a vet, is she then egg bound?
And if I can't feel anymore bumps I can put her back with the male?

Will upload pictures later today.
