Nubian spitter got me good!

Postby jigglypuff » Sun Mar 18, 2012 9:33 pm

Hi everyone

Today got the surprize of my life.......here we go...

This morning was so beautiful here in ct, thought i would love the snakepark today.
So convinced my gf and little brother. He wanted to bring 2 friends, said ok cool and off we go.

Went to a "unnamed" snakepark about 40 KM from ct and enjoyed showing the kids all the different snakes...

Till we got to the nubian spitters cage. She was calm and only spat at us once. I spent about 5 min looking at her as i love spitters, but suddenly she went nuts..started spitting constantly and i felt something cool on my cheek...

Oh Sh$t she got me...my left eye and cheek felt wet and i ran to bathroom to rinse...my gf called the park owner who assisted with rinsing.

In the meantime the guy working there noticed nubian cage glass wasnt 100% secure and she git me through about a milimeter gap.

I raced to tygerberg hospital and phoned for my mom, who works there, to get there and brief doctors. While driving there my eye started swelling and the pain was unbearable.

Upon arrival doctors didnt know what to do. They said antivenom, i convinced them to treat simptoms and leave antivenom.

Proceeded to rinse my eye with 4 liters saileen constantly and got me some pain pills.

Booked me in. Im there in bed now. Eye hurts like hell but no permanent damage.

Will keep everyone posted.

Ouch that is bad, hope you recover soon. I agree that the cage should have been more secure but it could happen to anyone. Most of us hes even lost a snake, the owner should have checked on the cage and made sure everything was 100% since it is a snake park and visitors should be kept safe, but anyone can make a mistake we are all just human.

That's just scary, I'd rather take my chances without them! :smt021

Glad you're okay though. And do follow up on the cages at the snake park.
Don't worry, its completely tame . . .

Hi Everyone

I contacted cape nature and i'm having the inspection officials go out there a.s.a.p.

I do agree though that this could happen to anyone and i'm just lucky it was me :-)

Feeling a bit better though now. Have about 4 bottles of different eyedrops for every hour but i'm sure i will pull through

You are wasting a fair amount of money by staying in hospital. Rinsing it with water or saline immediately was all that is required. Check that you dont have secondary infections but antibiotic opthalmic ointment will take care of that.

Quick question. Was the gap a design fault or do the front of the cages open? In other words was the cage left open a bit or is the cage built like that ?

1.1-burmese pythons
5.5-brown house snakes
1.0-taiwanese ratsnake
3.8-BCI
1.1-corn snakes

Any feedback on the cage problem and your eye?
