Black torstoise

Postby Moya » Mon Apr 09, 2012 3:50 pm

Hi all.

New to the forum.

We just moved to a plot in Midrand, and one of my dogs found herself a small tortoise. The little guy was as big as my entire hand and completely black with a fairly flat shell. Can anyone ID it?
PS: We took the dogs inside and let the little one wander off after it made the stinkiest pee I have encountered in a long a time. Said dog went and rolled in the pee, beaming with pride regarding her 'successful hunt'.

Thanks!!

Sounds exactly like a March terrapin.

Yip that was a marsh terrapin. The dog will smell funky for a few days. The terrapin was looking for a muddy area to burrow into for the winter. I hope you have a vlei nearby.
