Crested gecko breeder CT

Postby AS.Legion » Tue Sep 04, 2012 2:56 pm

Hi guys.

I am actually looking for a breeder in the Westeern Cape area that breeds Cresties.
I am living near Panorama Petshop, but they are charging a lot for theirs (R1500+) and they have been there for a while, so I would classify them as juvenile already.

If anyone can help out I would greatly appreciate it.

There are very few breeders in the western Cape. If you look at the expenses to get them to the Cape and the fact that the ones you mention are already quite big then that price is not much.

Crested geckos do not like being handled and will drop their tails easily. These tails do not grow back. Dont buy this species if your intention is to handle them.

Hmm.. cause on that regard I read multiple different views. But if that is the case :(

The problem is that I live in Cape Town so bearded dragons are out of the questions as are all other more handable lizards.

So what am I actually left with?

Blue tongues skinks are far more in that category.

Hmm I heard the name before but never did research into them.
So I take it they are legal in the Western Cape cause that is my biggest concern.

Time to do some habitat research.

Phone Cape Nature and ask them.

As for handling, if you want something to handle get a dog or something. Don't make the gecko have to tolerate your handling.

That is actually a good suggestion.

As for handling: for me there is a difference between handling and petting.
So I would take the gecko out once every few days to observe it a bit closer.. thats around it.

And that is also the reason why I am making all those enquiries. To educate myself to the best of my abilities before taking on the responsibility of having the life of something else in my hands.

I keep and breed crested geckos and with handling over 70 different individuals as well as newly hatched babies I have never had an issue. The only time they will loose a tail is if you hold onto it or really restrain them. I handle rarely and they seem to enjoy being handled. They like leaping from hand to hand and so on but yes you have to be gentle. They dont like being restrained so you have to guide them and handle close to the ground so the dont fall far. They are perfect choice of gecko and they are easy to keep.

My crestie is extremely tame and LOVES being handled. I can even rub her head gently with my finger!

They are the easiest to keep and most friendly reptile I have ever seen. But you should know that they have personalties just like me and you. Sometimes you get one that likes being alone and doesn't like being handled. But most of them are completely fine with it. Just don't restrain them as Bjorn said or they will loose their tail.

You should really consider getting one.

Ok, its official, I must get a crestie. I have blue tongue skinks, leopard gecko, veiled chameleon, ridgetail monitors, rock monitor, and a beardie. The cresties look awesome, I handle my lizzards sometimes, but not often. I hand feed them every meal though, except the chameleon, he is grumpy as hell, don't handle him either.

So any cape town crestie breeders?
