Snake Ring

Postby Kev » Mon Oct 08, 2012 6:52 pm

Thought some of you guys might appreciate this, it's a ring I started work on today for a client.
Still a long way to go, but here is my first attempt... just to see how I'm going to get the ring to work.

Very nice. :D

I have two questions. I hope they're not too inappropriate.

First, do you think that you could make one of similar design, but featuring a rattlesnake?

Second, how much would a one-off ring like that cost? (I understand that this might be an offensive question, but I assure you that that's not my intent. If the price is something within my range, I would love to buy such a ring.)

I'm always happy to do things like this... a bit of a change from the everyday engagement rings and more run of the mill jewellery.
The "organic" stuff is a lot more difficult to sculpt in 3D so it makes it a bit more rewarding in my opinion.
I'll be happy to give a rattlesnake a go... price would depend on what metal you wanted, it could work out cheap enough if you want it in silver... I'll send you a pm tomorrow.

Hi Kev

I love your jewellery. You are extremely talented and I wish I could afford to buy something from you but I have Rockerfeller's taste but not his money!! Especially since I have had full custody of my twin grandchildren for the last year and it seems like it may be a long time before mom is ready to take custody of them again.

Keep the pics coming - I think this ring will be really fantastic when completed - it's exactly my taste - something really unusual. I'm dying to see the finished result.

The biggest problem I have had with snake rings (and I have seen many in my life) is that they either look like worms or else they have parts sticking out that hook on everything. This design solves both those problems.

You can see this was designed by a herper. Its like when you see cartoons you know the cartoonist has owned a reptile or not from the first glance.

I am sure adding in a rattle will not be difficult. The mouth is what sold it for me. I wonder how much effort it will be to add scales?

Kev if I was you I would be looking at making a mold so that you can make more than one example of this design.

He Kev,

As everyone has said before you have designed the ring well.

If you don't mind me asking, what program are you using, Rhino or CAD?
1.1 Dwarf Reticulated Python
1.1 Green Tree Python
1.1 Jaguar Carpet Pythons
1.1 Bredli Carpet Pythons
0.1 Jungle Jaguar Carpet Python
0.0.1 Bosc Monitor
0.2 Mexican Red Knee (For Sale)

For something to happen, something must be done!!

Wow, that would look great in tungsten carbide, with that powder-coated look!

I'll have to do some research into the punishments for intellectual property theft.

Once again thanks for all the comments.

I actually started the scales today, they are not exactly accurate for any snake in specific but I think the effect will be achieved.
I was going to wait till I was a bit further to post some more pics, but seeing as though I've got time on this job, that may be in a few days.
So here is what I did this afternoon.

Yip I'm using Rhino, I have a plug in called T-Splines that helps with the "organic" stuff.

I will be making a mold of this once I stick it onto the printer...so it will be easy to reproduce.

Now how would you make it in tungsten carbide?
I can do it in silver, gold, platinum hell even stainless steel once my new casting machine arives in a few weeks, but tungsten carbide is new to me.

Tungsten has to be milled. I don't think you would be able to do it but I could be wrong.

I know they have got some nice rapid prototypers that will grow directly into titanium now days, maybe there is one that will do tungsten.
Well mine prints into a castable material and that covers all my needs, so I can't complain.
My workshop is in Orange Grove, just a few blocks up from the linkfield clinic, I also stay in Sandringham so it takes me less than 5 min to get to work... score!
