Hatching Scrub Pythons

Hatching Scrub Pythons

Postby Jason&Sam » Sun Feb 24, 2013 8:52 am

Hi Everyone

A while ago we did a post on our pair of pythons having laid 8 healthy eggs. We are happy to say that those eggs remained healthy and 85 days later they started to hatch! Wow what a long wait it was. After the first egg piped we decided to cut the remainder of the eggs. A few of the babies almost immediately started to take their first breaths of air, amazing to experience. Two came out of their eggs straight away, with no hesitation. The rest took their time over the next few days to leave the eggs.

We now have 8 beautiful baby barneck scrub pythons! We hope that you enjoy the pictures!

Great news and well done, I'm sure these have not been bred in SA often or at all. That is a long incubation time, at what temps were you incubating and what is the sex ratio of the hatchlings? The babies look huge!

Well done. Hopefully if they are handled a lot from baby they will remain easy to work with as they get older.

Thanks guy's so much.

@ Herphabitat, average incubation @ 31.5'C is around 82 to 89 days. Dropped temp to 30.5'C during the last 3 weeks of incubation, once eggs started to dent. Read that this has resulted in less fully formed babies dying in the egg. Not too much info out there on breeding these beauties. Hatchlings were between 50 and 60cm. Nice size to work with. We will sex them after their first shed, around 1 to 2 months time. Cant wait to see the ratio.

Arno I am going to do my best. The biggest one is the only one which is fiesty and has tagged me already. Its a keeper.

Cheers,
J.

Thanks Jason&sam, hopefully you have a 4.4 sex ratio there. It would be nice to see some pics of the parents too ;)

Hi everyone,

I'll need to take some proper pictures of the parents, however for now you could have a look at the previous post viewtopic.php?f=131&t=30718 for pics of the parents. :D

Thanks!

Now those are some BIG babies!

That picture of the baby coming out of the egg onto your hand is great.

Congrats on the new additions. I am sure you have made more than a few of us jealous.
