North West - A Kempton Park bookkeeper has been bitten on the face by a Mozambican spitting cobra while sleeping at a lodge in North West, it was reported on Tuesday.

A severe pain in his left eye woke Werner Bronkhorst, 25, at the Pilanesberg Game Reserve at the weekend. He heard a hissing noise and realised it was a snake, Beeld reported.

“You instinctively know it's a snake. I felt it bite me again, on the eye, and I grabbed it and threw it to one side. I felt blood running down my face,” he told the newspaper.

He ran for help, pausing only to grab a packet of cigarettes, “because I knew I was going to need them”.

According to Bronkhorst, the snake also attacked a water bottle and an empty cigarette box lying on the floor next to the bed.

“That snake wasn't right,” he said.

According to Beeld, rangers capture the reptile and released it into the park.

Bronkhorst was admitted to the Ferncrest Hospital, in Rustenburg, where he was reportedly in a stable condition.

Professor Graham Alexander, a snake expert at the University of the Witwatersrand, said he suspected that Bronkhorst might have rolled onto the snake in his sleep, and frightened the animal.

“Snakes don't just attack,” he said

And in the Beeld:

“Ek het gevoel hoe die bloed by my gesig afloop.”

My grootste vrees was dat ek deur ’n swart mamba gebyt is.”

- Kontak die nooddienste sou gou as moontlik by 0861 086 911

He is not the first person this season to take a bite to the face. I would give antivenom as quickly as possible and not stick to a conservative approach in this case.

There is a homeless guy near Pretoria who says he got tagged on the top of the head by a snake and he has lost some of his skull as well as a part of his brain. I find that one hard to believe. I only know of Forest cobras that destroy bone. Either way I would prefer that it never happen to me.

Agree BV, a bite in the face could be really bad, especially from a Mozambique spitter.

And that's about a 40 minute drive from Pilanesburg to Ferncrest plus the time from the bite to the time they exit the park gate. I shudder at the thought of Necrosis in the face. I'd also ensist on a huge amount of AV as soon as possible.
Don't worry, its completely tame . . .

In the Beeld to day:

He is doing well, swelling has subsided, and looks like he will make a full recovery in time

Die regterkant van my gesig lag saam, terwyl my linkerkant stokstyf bly.

“Ek moet my oog self toehou wanneer ek stort of bad.”
