3G Routers and internet access

Postby gekosin » Wed Apr 17, 2013 3:06 pm

Hi Everyone

Just wanted to maybe find out if anyone can advise on a good 3G Router? We will be moving soon and seems like ADSL will not be an option... I have been looking around but not having much luck... Also would it even be worth getting 3G for playing pc games? Even though i enjoy my games like Dota and such I dont want to waste my money if 3G is unreliable for gaming.

Any advice or option would be great!

Thanks!

I have quite allot of experience with 3G routers and the best possible option you can go for is building your own with a Mikrotik 411UAHR router board + Sierra Wireless MC8705 LTE modem.

Mine uses 5x antennas, 3x for WiFi (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) and 2x for 3G and it's incredibly reliable. If you don't mind spending R4k let me know and I'll send you the complete parts list and where you can buy them. I will also help you with the routerboard config.

And if your in the right area you can probaly even get onto the WUG with those parts.

Haha thanks Jacques for the hectic insight :) unfortunately with the move and security deposit, cash will be a bit tight I could probably scrape together about 2000 if I am lucky... I have had a look at the area and seems like i will be going with vodacom but yeah will have to see how it goes...

Is WUG still operational?
The JAWUG website is like a morgue. I've been trying to get another antenna setup to cover my area in a Joburg suburb and it's like speaking to a brick wall.

I have been off it for the past year the node I was cnnected to went down, but as far as I know its still functional.
As you say its probaly dying out although.
The irc is where you should be asking about coverage but it takes forever to get a reply.

I may have a Linksys WRT54G3G and Huawei PCMCIA 3G modem that I can give you. I will look for it tonight and check if it's still working. I think I might have removed the pigtail, but I'll check and make sure.

Hey Gekosin,

I have a couple of members in our clan that play with 3G. It seems fine for playing Dota and even Blops if you don't mind the occasional lag spike, but ideally you need to make sure you have decent coverage in the area you are moving too, the only other problem i can see is the high cost of data with the likes of Vodacom and Mtn and if that does not bother you go all out and get LTE!

Get yourself a decent hsdpa modem and get this deal http://www.8ta.com/plans/prepaid-data/60gbpromo
or you can go the contract route http://www.8ta.com/plans/postpaid-data/10gbpromo/.
Cheapest data so far, but you need good coverage.

Really appreciate the help guys! Seems like 8ta might be an option as the coverage seems decent for 3G will go look at the modems this weekend and take it from there!

Both me and my brother use 8ta.

Vodacom use to be good, but their prices are silly at the moment.

My brother plays league of legions with a 3G dongil as they keep stealing the phone lines.
He does get lag, but I'm sure you will have better signal that side of the world than here by us.

Morning all :)

Im back to looking at this as the move is finally over and we can now plan a budget.

We currently have a 3G dongle with MTN and it works very well in the area (this is due to expire in the next few months though)

I have been looking around and have found the following so far -

Dux412 R2200
WRT54G3GV2-VF - looking for a price

Any other viable options in this price range?

My other concern is that the current 3G dongle and others usually requires its own software, how would this work with the Router?

Thanks again :)

Try Uniterm direct(http://www.dbg.co.za/index.php?cPath=32_85) or Scoop ditribution(http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/inde ... sja9ubvrc1)
Routers have their own OS(firmware) so It can funtion as a standalone system no need for software.
