Brown house snake not eating

Postby Rykonan » Sun Apr 21, 2013 2:09 pm

My brown house snake has not eaten in about 2 months and I am really woried about him. I've tried living mice as well as frozen and he does not want to eat them. He kills the living ones but does not eat them.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to why he is not eating?
Really need some help urgently!!!

I had the same problem, lost one due to not eating, check your temps, since I decreased her temps she started eating again. Just check that its not to high or to low...

I wouldn't worry about it too much yet, they normally brumate this time of the year.

His temps are all fine, same as the others and they are all eating perfectly. He was bitten by one of the mice because he is a bit of a cluts when it come to catching his prey. I just do not want him to die due to hunger. My 2 month old juvenile house snake eats super well, just struggling with the adult male :(

Its quite normal for adult males to go off feeding this time of year. I would just let him bumate for the winter. If he is in good shape he should be fine by the end of winter.

Body wise he still looks awesome. He just gets very excited when I reach my arm into the tank as if he wants to try a piece of human for a change. But he does not seem to have lost body weight as of yet and he moves around a lot. So will just keep a close eye on him

I understand the part that it may be time for him to go into his hybernation pattern, but his eating stopped in the warm summer months. That's the main part that has me puzzled. Will keep trying to see if he will take food, but I guess its just a waiting game. If he gets hungry enough, he must eat.

Hi there, remember that males tend to go off food in summer aswell, especially if there is a female housie around. All three of my males went off food for about 3 months. I dropped the temps and fed them small meals when they started eating again and now they are nice and chubby for the winter. If you keep the snake on high heat while it isnt eating it will lose condition faster, keeping him cooler is a better option for now.

Will keep his temperature cooler than the rest of the snakes. There is a female around but I do not keep them in the same tank. They have seperate homes.

Last year my male housie went of food for 7 months, then resumed eating as if nothing had happened. So I wouldn't worry about it.

is keeping my male house snake not eating

Postby Rykonan » Tue Apr 23, 2013 4:50 pm

I have a male and a female brown house snake. They are both adults and are kept in seperate tanks. They are however kept in the same room about 4 meters apart. Could this be the reason why my male house snake is not eating? Is he still too close to the female??

House snakes do not mate this time of year. The female cannot hibernate with eggs inside her. Either warm up the cage and feed him or cool it down drastically and hope he has enough body fat to tide him over the winter.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

Note that I said males may go off food during SUMMER because they feel the need to focus on breeding rather than feeding.

My femnale never went in to hybernation last year. She layed 6 eggs during the winter months. House snakes are known to mate throughout the year if its warm enough
