BHS not eating

BHS not eating

Postby reptile » Fri May 30, 2014 11:32 am

Hi all,
I have two brown house snakes (BHS), about 70-80 cm. They are both housed in the same tank. One of them has recently gone of eating. This is very unusual for me, as he used normally accept meals very regular. The other snake is still eating like a elephant. :D I'm not worried, just curious. I've read about other BHS going of of food when there was a female around. Which leads to my next problem, as I have never sexed any of my snakes, and haven't anyone professional here who is capable of doing so. The BHS that has is not eating, does try to, what I think is mating, but its hard to tell, and the other snake seems to hate it. Any comments, and help will be greatly appreciated. :D

Mating involves the male chasing the female and trying to pin her down, if that's what your seeing then you probably have a pair.
Can you possible post a picture of the underside vent and tail of both snakes, it won't be an accurate id but we should be able to tell if they are male and female.

Looks like you have two male there. No wonder the other snake is not happy getting mounted. How long has he been off feed? They will naturally slow down feeding in the winter as the temperature drops.

Yup, I agree, two males.

I would not be too worried yet. Just keep offering food on a weekly basis.

I would also suggest you separate them if you have the capacity to do so.
